Name: Jenny Johnson
Position: Financial Solutions Consultant
Length of Employment: 31 years
Let’s turn the clock back to the start of your credit union career. What position did you first interview for? How did you learn of the position? What was your interview like?
I started in October of 1989 with Blandin Employees Credit Union, coming on as a teller. A friend of a friend told me about the position, and as I already had eight years of teller experience, I was hired! The interview that I had was with a wonderful lady that I knew of, but did not know personally. From the teller position, I was promoted to other departments throughout the credit union gaining much knowledge with each position transition. I went through many credit union name changes over the years which ended with Lakes Area Federal Credit Union (LAFCU) before it merged with MCCU.
What is your favorite MCCU memory?
My favorite memory was attending the GAC (Governmental Affairs Conference) held in Washington, DC.
What are three work-related facts about you?
When working with members and people, I am honest, friendly and reliable.
How has the financial world changed since you first started at MCCU?
Technology has been the biggest change over the course of years. I was trained on a dump terminal. For those that are young, which is probably the majority, it is a computer terminal that consists mostly of just a display monitor and keyboard. Also, when I first started working for the credit union, certificate rates were 10% and higher! Of course, loan rates were in the high teens and low twenties. Then, there are the ever-changing NCUA and federal regulations which have become more and more challenging.
What three items would you put in a MCCU time capsule to be opened up 100 years from now?
I would include a picture of all of the Grand Rapids staff with smiling faces; a telephone; and batteries because I cannot imagine batteries will remain as we know them now.
